About the Foundation

Purpose of the Alpha Chi Sigma Educational Foundation

The Alpha Chi Sigma Educational Foundation currently provides funds to support educational activities in consonance with the second and third Objects of the Fraternity.

The Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)3 corporation under the laws of the State of California in 1958, with Carl F. Prutton, Gamma 1919, L.W. Van Doren, Upsilon 1924, T.H. Harms, Sigma 1923, and Robert M. McManigal, Sigma 1922, serving as the incorporators.

The Alpha Chi Sigma Educational Foundation is not involved in the day-to-day operations of the Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity. Rather, it serves as a source of funding for many of the educational, professional, and charitable activities. For example, the Foundation funds both the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry and the Alpha Chi Sigma Award for Chemical Engineering Research given by the American Institute of Chemical Engineering. The Foundation also administers the J. Howard Mathews Memorial Fund, which provides low-interest loans to Brothers, and the H. Edson Minnerly, Jr. Memorial Fund, which supports the expansion of the Fraternity to campuses where there is not currently an active chapter. It also administers the Albert H. Cooper Memorial Scholarship Award, the Edmund E. Dunlap Scholarship/Grand Fund, the Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar Award, and several other endowed awards at campuses with an active Fraternity chapter. In connection with the Fraternity’s centennial celebration in 2002, it was the Foundation that raised money for the marker on the University of Wisconsin campus commemorating the founding and the founders of Alpha Chi Sigma.

Scholarship endowments constitute a significant fraction of the reserves held by the Foundation. These scholarships recognize the outstanding achievements of our Brothers and help soften the impact of the rapidly increasing cost of higher education. The Foundation is also the recipient of funds provided through various planned giving programs that support the ongoing mission of Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity and represent a lasting contribution to that mission by the donor.

MORE ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

The Foundation is administered by a Board of Trustees, which reports to the members of the Foundation, consisting of up to twenty individuals appointed to ten-year staggered terms. Neither the trustees nor members of the Foundation need to be members of the Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity.

The Educational Foundation is supported through voluntary, tax-deductible contributions and bequests as a 501(c)3 charitable professional and educational organization. Additional information about planned giving opportunities is available by contacting the National Office at foundation@alphachisigma.org.
